Tove Jansson Akebono Children’s Forest Park
Step into a storybook world at this forest inspired by the creator of Moomin
This nature park was designed to evoke the hometown of Tove Jansson, the creator of Moomin. Charming buildings straight out of the storybooks are scattered throughout the grounds, making a stroll here feel like walking through a picture book. Tokyo Summerland

With pools and attractions both indoors and outdoors, this is one of Tokyo’s leading water parks. Enjoy the open-air area in summer, and a heated indoor pool keeps the fun going all year. The area is inconvenient to reach by train with multiple transfers, but a direct drive gets you there with ease — no hassle even with large inflatables and beach gear in tow.
Musashi Kyuryo National Government Park
65 times the size of Tokyo Dome! A vast national park full of nature
This government park boasts an overwhelming scale, with flower fields, an adventure playground, and even a cycling course. The flowers and autumn foliage change beautifully with the seasons, and the grounds are so vast you could spend all day exploring. With several parking areas throughout, getting around by car makes it easy to hit all the highlights.
Sakitama Ancient Burial Mounds Park
Step back to ancient times at this burial mound cluster with a National Treasure sword
This is one of Japan’s most significant clusters of ancient burial mounds, with nine kofun scattered across the park. It’s famous for the “Inscribed Iron Sword,” a National Treasure unearthed here, which you can view up close at the adjoining museum along with other precious artifacts. Climb to the top of Maruhakayama Kofun for a sweeping view of the mounds and a landscape steeped in ancient history.
Nagatoro (Iwadatami)
Take in stunning views of the Arakawa River — nature’s own valley masterpiece
This valley along the Arakawa River is famous for Iwadatami, a nationally designated Place of Scenic Beauty and Natural Monument. Enjoy dramatic views from a traditional boat ride down the rapids, or stroll along the riverside. A short drive takes you to breathtaking, unspoiled nature that makes you forget the city entirely — a perfect destination for a scenic drive.
Hitsujiyama Park (Chichibu)
A sea of pink in full bloom, with sweeping views over Chichibu
In spring, the hillside at this park in Chichibu turns a vivid pink as the moss phlox comes into full bloom (best viewed mid-April to early May). From the observation deck, you can take in views of the town of Chichibu and Mt. Buko, along with nature that changes beautifully through the seasons. There are also hot spring day-use facilities nearby — perfect for soothing away the fatigue of your drive.
