Peak foliage timing varies from year to year. We recommend checking each spot’s official foliage forecast site before heading out. Mornings and evenings can be chilly, so it’s a good idea to bring a light jacket.
Recommended Spots
Mt. Takao
The closest Michelin three-star autumn leaf destination to central Tokyo
Awarded three stars in the Michelin Green Guide, this is one of Tokyo’s premier spots for autumn leaves. A cable car or chairlift makes it easy to reach the summit, and from mid to late November the entire mountain turns brilliant shades of red and yellow. The view of Mt. Fuji from the top is spectacular, and there’s plenty of great food to enjoy on your way down — a classic destination for a perfect autumn outing.

Showa Kinen Park
A golden avenue of ginkgo trees and cosmos fields as far as the eye can see
This government park is astonishingly vast — about 39 times the size of Tokyo Dome. In autumn, an avenue of roughly 200 ginkgo trees turns a brilliant gold, and the “Flower Hill,” carpeted in cosmos blooms, is another highlight. Spend a relaxed autumn day cycling or having a picnic on the grounds.
Kinchakuda
A vivid corridor of autumn color along the clear waters of the Koma River
Named for its “drawstring pouch” (kinchaku) shape, this lush natural area is encircled by the Koma River. In autumn, the maples along the riverbank turn brilliant colors, and the foliage reflected on the water’s surface is a highlight in itself. Nearby Koma Shrine is also worth a visit — a great spot to pair with a leisurely walk.

Akikawa Valley
Refreshing mountain foliage set to the sound of a rushing mountain stream
This valley offers nature so rich it’s hard to believe you’re still within Tokyo. In autumn, the surrounding mountains turn red and yellow, and a riverside promenade lets you take in the foliage at a relaxed pace. With barbecue areas and hot spring day-use facilities nearby, it’s a great spot to spend a full day immersed in nature.
Chikozan Park
A beloved local spot for an easygoing autumn leaves festival
This beloved community park in Sayama City includes a zoo and botanical garden. The trees throughout the grounds turn color in autumn, and an “Autumn Leaves Festival” is sometimes held to mark the season. With a spacious lawn area as well, it’s an easy autumn outing even for families with small children.

Lake Sayama & Lake Tama
A quick bike ride away — the closest autumn foliage spot to our hotel
Known as one of Tokyo’s key reservoirs, the area around Lake Sayama and Lake Tama is an easily accessible foliage spot you can reach by bicycle right from our hotel. Trees line the lakeside promenade, and in autumn you can enjoy beautiful foliage alongside the lake views. A great choice if you’d like to experience nature without spending too much time.
Koedo Kawagoe & the Kawagoe Festival
Historic storehouse streets and an autumn festival carrying on the spirit of old Edo
Known as “Little Edo,” Kawagoe’s historic streets take on a different charm in autumn. The Kawagoe Festival, held in mid-October, is a UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage event featuring gorgeously decorated floats parading through town. Even outside festival season, it remains a popular destination for strolling the streets, viewing autumn foliage, and sampling seasonal treats.
